"This is the generation of the great LEVIATHAN, or rather, to speak more reverently of that mortal god, to which we own under the immortal God, our peace and defense." -Thomas Hobbes: Leviathan
I believe it is possible to draw a broad correlation between attacks on the reality of marriage and family, and attacks on the reality of race.
A race is simply a very large family if one thinks about it very carefully. Sexual and marital eros attaches itself to the particular empirical features of the beloved, which eros gets transmuted into familial love for the child which bears the marks of the object of eros (he’s got his mother’s eyes!). A race is simply a very large family who possesses resembling empirical features which were once both the objects and products of such eros.
Of course in a large and complex society the civics of a locality would be based more on impersonal rule of law, a culture of manners and politeness, and various corporations and institutions, which ignores these specific features and allows a society of strangers to interact and engage in dealings with one another. This of course is the genius of British society or a “country of countries” where Scots and Welsh and English may be somewhat dissimilar and yet still be able to trade, make contracts and engage in industrial, commercial and academic enterprises together. China of course also coordinates and harmonises the plurality of races by entrenching a uniform Confucian culture or convention.
However an attack or complete negation of race as a social reality is fundamentally an attack against family, marriage and eros itself in its organic unity. It is one thing to say that certain civic interaction can ignore race, it is another thing to banish and even actively eliminate its reality from public life altogether. No doubt many false and superstitious ideas have been advanced about total racial or genetic determinism of behaviour, but while we would hold that culture is the more decisive factor in determining behaviour than genetics, we should not err on the other side to complete negate or ignore its significance in core civic ordinances like marriage and the family.
In the end I prefer the golden mean maintained by the German Lutherans in 1933 in their answer to Hitler’s political programs.
The question whether race belongs to the orders of creation [e.g. marriage, family, work and economy, government, property, etc] is discussed much today. Based on Holy Scripture and the confession it is to be answered this way: Race, unlike marriage or worldly authority or nation, does not belong to the orders of life with which God’s commandment has charged man. It belongs to the orders of nature to which all life, even outside of mankind, is necessarily subjected (cf. the “laws of the seasons,” Ap. XVI, 6). In this sense, the reality of race, as all orders of nature, may be counted among the divinae ordinationes in the broader sense. Holy Scripture, in what it says about our flesh, attests to what is true in the modern ideas on race, namely, that the inner life is bound to the form of our corporeity. The church’s doctrine concerning race cannot go beyond this. In particular, it must reject all attempts to place the natural phenomenon of race on the same level as the institutional orders that are grounded in a direct divine commandment to man.
In conclusion, think there is in fact a very good case to be made here for that there is a strong correlation between racial nihilism and the disintegration of the family and marriage in the West.
